On a farm you see life and death—your favorite horse dies after riding him for 12 years, or the coyotes kill a baby calf or the mother duck. We are constantly exposed to the beauty of life and the reality of death. I grew up in a farm family where the relatives were all very close. The entire community celebrated a birth and death. These close knit rural farming communities have depended on independence and community for hundreds of years, but life has special appreciation and value.
