My favorite horse was named Sunspot. He was really my brother’s horse, but I rode him all the time. I would barrel race with him, but he was too slow for the county fair. However, he was excellent at trailing cattle, and he had the patience to follow behind the mother cows and their slow babies. We would trail cattle from one range to another, sometimes spending eight to ten hours on horseback. He was a calm and loving appaloosa, and the love between him and my family was mutual. I learned many a lesson atop Sunspot. I remember getting off him one late afternoon and the pain of the cold just shooting up my already numb legs, as though a spike were going up through my legs in the bitter cold. Farm kids are tough, though, and I always learned to work through it.
